Southold, a 10.5-square-mile hamlet on the North Fork of Long Island, is known for its scenic views, tranquil beaches and abundance of outdoor activity options. The area is being increasingly targeted by retirees looking to stay close to their families while enjoying all that the high-end suburban neighborhood has to offer.

Remember, the hamlet of Southold differs from the town of Southhold. The town includes the smaller hamlet but covers a larger area of land between Riverhead and Orient Point. The hamlet includes all the benefits of small-town living — mom and pop shops, breathtaking beaches, peaceful vineyards, bustling harbors and even its own opera house.

Comprising a thorough mix of weekenders and full-timers, the hamlet of Southold is being embraced for its accessibility, natural scenery and waterfront homes. With Peconic Bay to the south and the Long Island South to the north, the hamlet has more than its fair share of creeks, coves and inlets.

Small cottages start at around $400,000, but newer, million-dollar properties are continually being built as well. With a population of about 5,700 residents, the hamlet is just a quick two to two-and-a-half hour drive from New York City. Of course, peak summertime travel may result in lengthier commutes.

Above all, living in the hamlet of Southold provides the little slice of country that many city-dwellers perpetually yearn for.

“If you live on the North Fork or visit often, sooner or later you’re bound to make a stop in Southold: at the Southold Fish Market, where your dinner was swimming in nearby waters only hours before; at Ace Hardware, one of few national chain stores there, where weekenders, residents and the many contractors refurbishing centuries-old houses intersect,” writes Jan Benzel in the NYT, “at North Fork Table and Inn, a farmhouse restaurant of renown, with a food truck in the parking lot; or at KK’s The Farm, known for its organically grown fruits and vegetables.”
